This is the alternate airport for Juan Santamaria Intl. It's located near the city of Liberia, in the province of Guanacaste. It's only a 40-min flight from San Jose and it's runway has almost the same dimensions as the Juan Santamaria's runway. Also it's direction is the same (07-25)

The History:

The idea of providing an airport to the Guanacaste region goes back to the Daniel Oduber presidency (1974-1978), when the construction started in the place called Llano Grande (12km, 8mi west of the city of Liberia).
The airpot was reinaugurated on the 28th of October, 1995, after spending 700 million colones, and renamed Daniel Oduber Intl Airport, in honor to a costarrican ex-president. Also LACSA introduced that day the first commercial flight, first arriving from San Jose, and then departing to Miami, using a 737-2L9 (N281LF).

The Runway:

The Daniel Oduber airport has only one physical runway but both ends are usable. The two usable runways are 07 and 25.

Runway 07:
Usable Lenght: 9022ft - 2750m

Runway 25:

The Future:

Currently a few airlines are starting scheduled fights to Liberia from the USA. Among these we found Delta Airlines and Grupo Taca,
but the Liberia Airport is growing rapidly. Delta just announced the increase in frequency of it's Liberia-Atlanta flight. American and
Continental are schedule to start operations by the end of January, 2004.

This increase in traffic will requiere and inmediate action by the authorities to increase the capacity of the airport terminal. The plans for this upgrade are currently under way. The aircraft ramp capacity was increased to park 4 airliners. And the main terminal will have two more adjoining buildings to handle the Arrivals and Departures.

Smaller traffic is also increasing as Nature Air opened the route Liberia to Granada, Nicaragua, operated by a Twin Otter.
